Questions to Ask When Planning a Funeral: A Guide to Empowering Families

Discover key questions to ask when planning a funeral. Learn about service options, costs, personalisation, and support to create a meaningful farewell.

Planning a funeral is never easy. Grief, stress, and the pressure to make quick decisions can leave families feeling overwhelmed. One of the best ways to ease the process is by asking the right funeral planning questions — ensuring you have clear information, thoughtful options, and the confidence to make choices that honour your loved one.

This guide highlights key questions to ask when planning a funeral, helping families feel informed, supported, and empowered.

1. What Are Our Funeral Service Options?

Before making decisions, ask yourselves:

  • Do we want a traditional funeral, memorial service, celebration of life, or a simple private gathering?
  • Can the funeral company help personalise the service with music, live streaming, or a digital photo montage?
  • Is the service limited to the funeral premises, or can it be held in another location?  Please note that in Mallorca, the coffin can only be present in the funeral home or church.

Knowing your funeral service options allows you to create a meaningful experience that reflects your loved one’s personality and values.

2. What Choices Do We Have for Burial or Cremation?

When asking how to plan a funeral, the burial or cremation decision is often the biggest. Consider:

  • What types of burial plots or mausoleums are available, where are they and how long do we own them?
  • What are the cremation options — direct cremation, cremation with a service, or scattering of ashes?
  • Are there eco-friendly choices, such as green burials or biodegradable urns?  Please note that green burials are not yet in the scope of the imagination of the funeral industry in Spain.

Exploring these choices ensures you find an option that feels right for your family.

3. What Funeral Costs Should We Expect?

Funeral expenses can vary greatly. Be sure to ask:

  • What is included in the funeral provider’s basic service fee?
  • Can we see a full breakdown of costs for caskets, urns, transportation, and facilities?
  • Are package options available, or can we customise services?
  • What payment plans, insurance options, or financial assistance programmes are offered?

Understanding funeral costs upfront empowers families to make decisions that are both meaningful and financially manageable.

4. How Can We Personalise the Funeral?

A funeral is about honouring life, so personalisation matters. Consider asking:

  • Can we include cultural, spiritual, or family traditions?
  • Are options like video tributes, live-streaming, or memory tables available?
  • How can children, friends, and community members be involved?

These questions help create a unique tribute that celebrates your loved one’s story.

5. What Support Services Are Available?

Planning doesn’t stop at the service itself. Families should ask:

  • Does the funeral home help with paperwork, death certificates, and any benefits?
  • Is grief counselling or aftercare support available?
  • Are there options for ongoing memorialisation, such as online obituaries or keepsakes?

Comprehensive support ensures families feel cared for even after the service ends.

6. How Can We Ensure Our Loved One’s Wishes Are Honoured?

A vital part of funeral planning is honouring your loved one’s wishes. Ask:

  • Did they express preferences for burial, cremation, or the type of service?
  • How can we balance those wishes with the needs of our family?
  • Can the funeral home help us with pre-planning for the future?

These questions provide peace of mind and ensure the farewell reflects your loved one’s values.

Frequently Asked Questions About Funeral Planning

1. What is the average cost of a funeral?

The typical cost of a funeral in Mallorca can begin at 3,000€, and rise if you haven’t done your homework and also depending on burial or cremation choices, service type, and personalisation. Always request a detailed price list from the funeral provider.

2. What is the difference between a funeral and a memorial service?

A funeral typically includes the body present (burial or cremation follows), while a memorial service takes place after, without the body present and maybe with the ashes present. Both can be customised to fit your family’s traditions and preferences.

3. How far in advance can you pre-plan a funeral?

You can pre-plan at any time. Many families choose to arrange plans well in advance to relieve future stress and lock in current pricing.  It is always best to pre-plan directly with a funeral company.

4. Can a funeral be live-streamed?

Sadly, not many funeral providers in Mallorca offer live-streaming options for family and friends who cannot attend in person.  However, this can be made available through other companies.

5. What are eco-friendly funeral options?

Eco-friendly choices include green burials (without embalming, using biodegradable caskets or shrouds) and biodegradable urns for cremation ashes. Some cemeteries even offer designated natural burial areas.  All this is widely available in the UK and severely limited in Mallorca.
